Frequently asked questions

ECOWAS nationals are exempt. For many other nationalities, an online visa application (e-visa) is available, completed on arrival at Abidjan airport. Rules change: always check with the relevant Ivorian consular authority and your airline before booking.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter the country. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult an international vaccination centre or your doctor several weeks before departure: this information is general and does not replace medical advice.

Félix-Houphouët-Boigny international airport is in Port-Bouët, about twenty minutes from the Plateau outside rush hour, longer in the late afternoon. Licensed taxis and ride-hailing serve every district; most hotels offer a shuttle on request, to be booked before arrival.

The currency is the CFA franc (XOF), pegged to the euro. Euros and dollars are easily exchanged in banks and licensed bureaux in the Plateau or Cocody. ATMs are plentiful. Always keep small notes: few businesses can change large ones.

Three days cover the essentials: Plateau, Cocody, Treichville and one night out in Zone 4. Allow five to seven days to add Grand-Bassam, a beach day in Assinie and a nature escape to Banco park or Boulay island.
