Getting to Abidjan

Paris

Flight
6 h 15 en direct
Airlines
Air France, Air Côte d'Ivoire, Corsair
Best season
December to March, dry season
Return budget
450 000 à 800 000 F CFA aller-retour

Insider tip

Flights from Paris often land in the evening: book your hotel shuttle before you leave rather than haggling over a fare at 11 pm, tired, outside the terminal.

Brussels

Flight
6 h 30 en direct
Airlines
Brussels Airlines, Air Côte d'Ivoire
Best season
December to March, or October between the rains
Return budget
400 000 à 700 000 F CFA aller-retour

Insider tip

This route is popular with the diaspora: holiday and school-break periods push fares up very early. Booking three months ahead genuinely changes the bill.

Montreal

Flight
11 à 15 h avec une escale
Airlines
Air France, Brussels Airlines, Royal Air Maroc (via Paris, Bruxelles ou Casablanca)
Best season
December to February, to escape the winter
Return budget
700 000 à 1 100 000 F CFA aller-retour

Insider tip

There is no direct flight: a European or Moroccan stopover is unavoidable. Choose a layover of at least three hours; tight connections are the main cause of lost luggage on this route.

New York

Flight
12 à 16 h avec une escale
Airlines
Air France, Brussels Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Turkish Airlines
Best season
December to March
Return budget
750 000 à 1 200 000 F CFA aller-retour

Insider tip

The time difference works in your favour: flights land in the morning or early afternoon. Plan an easy first day rather than a work meeting straight off the plane.

Dakar

Flight
2 h 15 en direct
Airlines
Air Côte d'Ivoire, Air Sénégal, ASKY
Best season
All year, ideally November to April
Return budget
200 000 à 400 000 F CFA aller-retour

Insider tip

Same currency, same zone: no exchange needed, and the CFA franc works identically. Flights are frequent, which makes a three-day round trip perfectly workable.

Casablanca

Flight
4 h 15 en direct
Airlines
Royal Air Maroc, Air Côte d'Ivoire
Best season
November to March
Return budget
300 000 à 550 000 F CFA aller-retour

Insider tip

Casablanca is the handiest hub for reaching Abidjan from southern Europe and North America. If you are transiting, a long layover allows a trip into town: a Moroccan visa is not required for every nationality, so check first.

Good to know before you go

Félix-Houphouët-Boigny airport

Visa and e-visa

Information given for guidance only and subject to change. Always check with the relevant authorities and your airline before booking.

Frequently asked questions

ECOWAS nationals are exempt. For many other nationalities, an online visa application (e-visa) is available, completed on arrival at Abidjan airport. Rules change: always check with the relevant Ivorian consular authority and your airline before booking.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter the country. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult an international vaccination centre or your doctor several weeks before departure: this information is general and does not replace medical advice.

Félix-Houphouët-Boigny international airport is in Port-Bouët, about twenty minutes from the Plateau outside rush hour, longer in the late afternoon. Licensed taxis and ride-hailing serve every district; most hotels offer a shuttle on request, to be booked before arrival.

The currency is the CFA franc (XOF), pegged to the euro. Euros and dollars are easily exchanged in banks and licensed bureaux in the Plateau or Cocody. ATMs are plentiful. Always keep small notes: few businesses can change large ones.

Three days cover the essentials: Plateau, Cocody, Treichville and one night out in Zone 4. Allow five to seven days to add Grand-Bassam, a beach day in Assinie and a nature escape to Banco park or Boulay island.
